Uvaggio 2009 Vermentino - Uvaggio winemaker Jim Moore is making a serious case here for Lodi Vermentino, a white Italian grape not too distant in flavor from pinot grigio but more intense. This bottling is a stunner that’ll keep you thinking and asking for more. It’s compelling — savory with herb and green olive notes, and yet freshly fruity and delicate, well integrated and plenty acidic to stand up to a free-range of food, with only 11 percent alcohol." |

"One of Lodi's most original white wines today is made from the Vermentino grape by Jim Moore, owner and winemaker of Italian-inspired wines under the Uvaggio label. "Vermentino," says Moore, "is the thinking man's Pinot Grigio." Like Pinot Grigio, it tends to be light, dry, and breezy; lemony tart without being puckery. Where Vermentino veers off-as in the 2009 Uvaggio Lodi Vermentino ($14)-is in its multifaceted fragrances, quite the opposite of the usually neutral Pinot Grigio: lavender, thyme, and lime blossom fragrances, with undertones of cantaloupe and nuances of wild honey and cream. On the palate, it's silkier than your typical Pinot Grigio, dry and lithe, the crisp qualities popping through the fleshy fruit, stony and, yes, lavendery sensations. April 1st, 2011 "AA stunning and unusual white wine out of Lodi made by Jim Moore, with tremendous aromatics of honeysuckle and melon and a genius balancing between sweetness and acidity. Grapes—technically Moscato Giallo—were harvested from the Bella Vigna Vineyard fully ripe but at low brix, allowing this bottling to maintain a very low 12% alcohol level. An amazing deal for a wine that jumps out of the glass, all bright and starry eyed." — Virginie Boone |
